President’s Report:
·
Welcome - Lisa
welcomed everyone to the first of the summer meetings following the new
schedule outlined in the revised and approved Bylaws. She noted the July 1 HCIC meeting will take place on the Barge
(near Dalby Road and Hwy 106, next to the Cameo Boutique). The agenda will be an informal “Meet and
Greet” the candidates and the Club will be offering apple pie in a small mason
jam jar.
·
Dalby Water
Wheel update – Lisa and Larry DeForrest recently met with the new Watermark LLC
manager to discuss the Club’s plans for enhancing of the site as well as the
ongoing maintenance of the Water Wheel.
It was noted the area for the proposed placement of a bench is on state
property (within the 30 foot range of midline highway area). Lisa would like to schedule a work party to
spruce up the area and a volunteer sign-up sheet was distributed. (Volunteers
- Larry DeForrest, Maureen Woodcock, Henry Biernacki, Merlyn Flakus, Karen
Burger and Steve Levette)
Honoring Outgoing President, Barbara Levette:
Lisa acknowledged Barbara’s hard work on behalf of the Club and presented her with a $50 gift certificate for Hunter Farms, contributed by members of the newly-elected HCIC Board.

1.
Union boat
ramp improvements – The permitting
and design for the improvements to the boat ramp call for extending the ramp
further into the water. Working with the
Dept. of Natural Resources has been challenging. He has also been working with the Dept. of
Fish & Wildlife. He is finishing a
grant proposal that will be submitted to the state for funds that would be
available next year. John stated the shortage of available parking near the
boat ramp may prove to be an issue; however, he felt it was an issue that could
be overcome. The ramp project and funding will be presented at a future County
Commissioner public hearing. John
welcomed citizen attendance and/or public comments at the hearing as well as
letters supporting the ramp project from Union residents. Constance agreed to make contact with the
Skokomish Tribe to enlist their support of the project.
2.
County Community
Trail under Power Lines – John has
been working with several agencies (Navy, Tacoma Power, railroad lines) to
obtain the necessary easement for the trail.
Some of the land is privately owned.
The initial trail would begin near Allyn in North Mason County and
connect with the Theler Wetlands. He
noted Kitsap County and Bremerton are also weighing in on the project.
3.
Union Park
Ball Field improvements – The plan
is to remove the existing grass covering the infield and replace it with proper
infield material. The infield material
will be removed and transported from two of the MCRA ball fields as part of an upgrade project slated for the summer-end of
2015.
4.
Shoreline
Street Ends – The four shoreline
street ends (Orre Nobles, Mason Rd Extension, Main Street & Fir) are there for
public access to and from the water and may not be restricted for this purpose.
John agreed that minor enhancements to these areas are appropriate but
recommended that we not overbuild the sites.
In fact, he stated that he regularly uses the Orre Noble road end area
when he is cycling in the area. Two-way
signage – visible from both the waterside and the roadside – is necessary. He
noted that signage, a picnic table and/or benches would be welcomed by walkers,
cyclists, and kayakers alike. With a
newly-elected commissioner, he suggested this is a good time to propose this
project. Again, as with the board ramp
it will important for Union community members to show their support.
5.
Other county
projects mentioned were the receipt
of a significant grant that will allow for construction of two additional MCRA
ball fields. Also, the football / soccer
field is scheduled to be upgraded to a synthetic surface at a cost of $1million
split evenly between the County and the North Mason School District.
The HCIC members extended a
sincere thanks to John Keates for attending this meeting and responding to our
request for information and will be following up for action on these items.
Adjournment / Suspension of other business
formalities i.e., approval of minutes and financial report. In the
interest of hot dogs awaiting hungry members, the remaining business will be
suspended. Copies of the May 6 General Meeting and May financials were
available for review.
